Challengers are designed specifically to allow disabled people to sail safely and have lots of fun on the water. They have one main hull with two outriggers – one on either side, so they are unlikely to capsize. A “buddy seat” is often lashed to the hull which lets a helper sail with a person who needs physical help to steer or control the mainsail.
They are exciting boats to sail on a breezy day – and very safe. Usually a traveller series of events is run throughout Scotland.
To make this event a success we need as many volunteer helpers as possible – on the shore, in the galley and on safety boats and just generally taking part in this important sailing event. Please let the Swec know if you are interested.
